Yesterday was a big night for Television fans as the 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards went on air in Los Angeles. The PrimeTime Awards went on a limb to organize an in-person event rather than virtual ceremonies happening for most events this year. The event was held on the eve of Sunday, that is, September 19 (September 20 early morning in India) in Los Angeles’ Event Deck at L.A. Live. Hosted by Cedric the Entertainer, the Emmy Awards 2021 took place at the Event Deck at LA Live. Owing to the pandemic, the award ceremony was conducted in an indoor-outdoor venue for this year. Also, all attendees were mandated to show their proof of vaccination in order for entry into the ceremony. Ted Lasso and Mare of Easttown were the early winners at the Emmys Awards, ruling the supporting actor awards for comedy series as well as limited series.
The Crown was awarded 7 major categories while the actress Kate Winslet herself achieved one for acting in Mare of Easttown. The Primetime Emmy Awards was held for the 73rd time this year on Sunday. They are considered the best to recognize and award great television content. At par with the Oscars and Academy Awards for movies, The Emmy Awards rule the television field. In the event, Ted Lasso had the max number of nominations, that is, 13. Out of them, the show bagged 4 awards, 3 of them in the acting category while the other one was for Outstanding Comedy Series. But The Crown stole this year’s Emmy Awards with a sweeping 7 trophies in its pocket. Jason Sudeikis won for his performance in Ted Lasso, while the show went on to win the Outstanding Comedy Series award.
The Emmy Awards 2021 organizers decided against organizing a virtual event because of the ongoing pandemic and went with a fully official in-person event held at Event Deck at L.A. Live, in Los Angeles. Actor and comedian Cedric Antonio Kyles was invited to host this year’s Emmy Awards ceremony, who is also very well known as Cedric the Entertainer, his stage name. There are a variety of Emmy events conducted every year set by the calendar. They award national television shows as well as regionally and locally produced programs. And every event organizes and scrutinizes its voting and nominating procedures and make their own rules concerning voting committees and also choose their own categories of awards. So it is pretty common to have the same category names in different Emmy events. But a show cannot be nominated for more than one Emmy event at one time. For instance, syndicated shows have varying air times in different regions and therefore are eligible to enter both the Daytime Emmys and Primetime Emmys, but can be entered only in one of the two at a time.
Generally speaking, when a show reaches more than half of the U.S. households, it is regarded as a national show. While the TV programs that do not accomplish this percentage come under regional shows and so are entered into the Regional Emmys. Streaming television shows are treated similar to syndicated shows, that is, they have to be available to more than half of the US population for downloading as well as streaming to be considered eligible for national Emmy events. Plus they can be nominated in only one of those national Emmy awards. Earlier, there used to be only one Emmy award function conducted annually to award and appreciate national Tv shows in the U.S.
This changed in the year 1974 when the very first Daytime Emmy ceremony was held to honor as well as appreciate national daytime programs exclusively. Soon, other area-oriented Emmy events emerged. The International Emmy Awards that claims to appreciate and award television programs outside of the U.S. was also established in the early 1970s. You can find all the Emmy events that emerged during and before this period, area-specific or otherwise, including the Primetime Emmy Awards; in the ATAS’s official records for anyone to have a look.
