OnePlus has, in a recent interview, revealed three major Android updates along with four security patches by sharing a list of its software support for all the OnePlus flagship phones. And with that OnePlus merged with OxygenOS codebase with Oppo’s ColorOS and declared that they will soon switch to the integrated codebase on the current phones from the Android 12 update. All this was discussed in an XDADevelopers interview where OnePlus told that the forthcoming OnePlus Nord 2 will be the first phone from the company to run on OxygenOS v11.3 based on an integrated codebase (out of the box). Since OnePlus’s upcoming Nord 2 model will become the first phone even to boot the new OxygenOS-ColorOS hybrid UI, it will be known as the OxygenOS 11.3. This is an outcome of the recent merger between the two companies.
The build of the new model is based on Android 11 and operates on OnePlus as well as OPPO’s integrated codebase. For the unversed, July 22 is the date to mark the Nord 2 launch in the Indian subcontinent. At the beginning of July, OnePlus changed its update policy for the range of devices and disclosed the fact that its software development team is working with Oppo to integrate the codebase of OxygenOS and ColorOS. And in the present day, the Head of Product in OnePlus, Oliver Zhang, told in an interview that the OnePlus Nord 2 5G will be the first OnePlus handset to feature an OxygenOS firmware that will be solely on the integrated codebases. Well, OnePlus has its reasons for bringing this epic change.
The major one for updating to an integrated codebase directly out of the box is so they could streamline resources. After the two giants announced their merge, all their resources as well as their research and development will be shared commonly so it will give a seamless streamlined experience to the users. In spite of all this, not much is going to change concerning daily usage and smooth experience looking at its predecessor separate OxygenOS codebase. “The main idea behind the codebase integration is to streamline our R&D resources, which will help us to deliver more timely and more stable software updates for our devices while being able to maintain our devices for longer,” Oliver Zhang stated in an interview with XDA Developers. Apart from all this, he also told that we need to be patient with more key details of the upcoming OnePlus Nord 2.
Reports are coming about OnePlus choosing a MediaTek flagship SoC acknowledging its price to value ratio. Zhang the OnePlus executive also verified this and told us that the Nord 2 will feature a 6.43-inch Fluid AMOLED display with a high 90Hz refresh rate. Zhang also threw some light on the AI-based features of Nord 2, including AI Video Enhancements, AI Resolution Boost, AI Color Boost, Nightscape Ultra, and AI Photo Enhancements. Reports suggest that the AI Color Boost feature will “utilize the context-aware capabilities of AI to detect what the users are watching on the screen from popular apps”. As for the social media sites, the AI Resolution Boost will be able to automatically improve low-resolution video to HD resolution.
“From a user perspective, not much will change on a daily basis when using OxygenOS,” Zhang assured the users, telling them that the upcoming OnePlus Nord 2 will boot OxygenOS 11.3 due to the virtue of integrated OxygenOS and ColorOS codebase. Moreover, Zhang also suggested that the codebase integration will not have any effect on the user experience, and users will experience the same fast and smooth action that they are familiar with from OnePlus. Many other specifications were also revealed in the interview including a 32MP selfie camera, 50MP Sony IMX766 triple rear camera, as well as a 4,500mAh battery cell for the OnePlus Nord 2. The Nord 2 model will have some other features too like an in-display fingerprint sensor and a 6.43-inch Full HD+ display backed by an AMOLED panel with support for a 90 Hz refresh rate.
OnePlus suggested that its upcoming product Nord 2 can be the first OnePlus phone to be backed by the MediaTek Dimensity 1200 processor and will probably be available with a max of 12 GB RAM and 256 GB storage variants. Furthermore, the OnePlus Nord 2 will sport a punch-hole cut-out with a slim bottom bezel and an in-display fingerprint sensor as well as a triple camera unit on the rear side. Apart from the above-mentioned specifics, the Nord 2 may also include a 50 MP primary camera, a 2 MP macro camera, as well as an 8 MP ultra-wide-angle camera along with a front-facing 32 MP camera. The battery charge may be up to 4,500 mAh pack, expected to be with fast charging. Zhang also clarified the rumors that OnePlus won’t allow its users to unlock the bootloader of the devices after codebase integration.
He said that the company will allow users to unlock the bootloader on the OnePlus Nord 2. The OnePlus Nord 2 is ready to hit the Indian market on July 22 as well as the European market. It is deemed to be the first of its kind to be powered by a MediaTek processor. As for the pricing details of the product, for India it is yet to be disclosed and will be revealed on the day of launch, that is, on 22nd July. But considering its features, its price will land somewhere around Rs. 30,000. OnePlus Nord 2 can be purchased through Amazon India. The esteemed model will have power from a MediaTek Dimensity 1200-AI chipset, paired with up to 12GB of RAM and up to 256GB of storage. For connectivity, the device is expected to offer support for dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.1, GPS, NFC, 5G, and a Type-C port.
It will boot Android 11-based OxygenOS 11.3 and pack a 4,500mAh battery with 65W fast-charging support. With the launch of the OnePlus Nord 2, the company plans to revive its hype when the original Nord smartphone was born. The upcoming model is expected to contain a 6.43-inch Fluid AMOLED screen with a Full-HD+ (1080×2400 pixels) resolution, an aspect ratio of 20:9, a 90Hz refresh rate, and HDR10+ support. OnePlus will launch its model in India on July 22 and may also launch a pair of TWS buds dubbed OnePlus Buds Pro the same day.
