The Qualcomm’s Snapdragon successor named Snapdragon 8cx Gen 2 5G Computing Platform based on ARM Architecture revealed on Thursday at IFA 2020. This next-generation chipset was launched almost two years after the launch of the first generation of Snapdragon laptops. The chipset with powered with an AI engine that is powered with radical enhancements relative to its predecessor. The Snapdragon 8cx Gen 2 5 G integrates Wi-Fi 6 and allows 5G networking with a separate router, both Sub-6GHz and 5G mm Wave. The chipset even provides a “multi-day” life on upcoming computers with power quality.
Eight Qualcomm Kryo 495 CPU cores are used in the Snapdragon 8cx Gen 2 5G, built on a 64-bit architecture and 7 nm manufacturing process. This chipset also has a dedicated AI Engine as we told above, and this engine provides machine learning enhancement with the Hexagon 690 processor and Sensing Hub technology. All of this allows the latest Snapdragon 8cx, which launched in December 2018, to be upgraded.
However, Qualcomm said in its media release that the Snapdragon 8cx Gen 2 5G provides more than 50 percent better system-wide efficiency and battery life over rival options, rather than emphasizing gains in performance over its predecessor. This indicates that Qualcomm is preparing the Snapdragon 8cx Gen 2 5G to encourage Windows Laptop producers against Intel chips. That being said, the Snapdragon 8cx Gen 2 5G is designed in order to have better WiFi 6 and Bluetooth v5.1 networking experiences. In addition to the Snapdragon X24 LTE modem function, the Chipset also has a Snapdragon X55 5G modem. It is the same as what was available in the previous model Snapdragon 8cx.
The Qualcomm Spectra 390 image signal processor (ISP), based on the 2018 chip, has also been retained in the Snapdragon 8cx Gen 2 5G chipset. The ISP provides support for a double camera with resolutions of up to 16MP or a single camera with a resolution of up to 32MP. The Snapdragon 8cx Gen 2 5G uses the AI engine to improve the connectivity of video calls with features like accelerated eye contact and interactive avatars. Microsoft Secured Core Computer and Windows Hypervisor are also supported by this chipset from Qualcomm.
The Snapdragon 8cx Gen 2 5G chipset will be launched and available in the commercial devices right from this year later, since Acer Spin 7 based on this latest technology has been revealed already. Nothing can be done to reassure Qualcomm that developers will create applications for their chipset instead of doing the same for AMD and Intel. Microsoft, however, is launching a program named “App Assure” especially to create the Snapdragon ecosystem which will enable a seamless switching of Windows applications.
